Keystone Simulation & Education Center

At a power density of only 1.01 watts per square foot the Keystone Simulation and Education Center (KSEC) is 33% below ASHRAE 90.1 recommendations. Originally the Potter Township Elementary School, the facility exemplifies green building design. The U-shape of the building footprint allows the corridor of the building to be flooded with natural light throughout the daylight hours eliminating the need for supplemental electric lighting. The lighting control system utilizes photo sensors and an astronomic time clock to  turn on the corridor lighting only when needed.

KSEC provides real-life education for both the medical professional and student.  There are many different dedicated simulation areas --- emergency room, ICU, OR, birthing and neonatal ICU, and more. There are debriefing and classroom experiences to amplify the experience and improve the student performance in the simulations.

The simulation rooms and classroom share a common lighting design philosophy. High clearstory windows and sloped ceiling provide abundant natural light while direct/indirect luminaires controlled by photo sensors and astronomic time clock provide supplemental light when natural light levels are low. Although this type of lighting design would be inappropriate in a health care facility, it provides both the classrooms and simulation rooms with a high quality, low glare lighting environment that is flexible and energy efficient.
